Attention – Inquiries regarding Snow Removal on Cranston Pathways & Walkways - posted Thursday, January 05, 2012

A few Cranston Residents have inquired about snow removal on Cranston’s pathways and walkways.  Inquiries were made  through the Forum’s on the website, in person at Century Hall and via email.  Please be advised that Century Hall and the Cranston Residents Association (CRA)staff are not able to provide snow and ice removal services to these areas due to high costs and liability issues.  If the CRA were to initiate a snow removal program, the liability transfers from the City to the CRA.  Your CRA Board looked at the cost of snow removal and landscaping throughout the community and determined that the CRA is not in a financial position to take this on at this time.  Please refer to the audited financial statements posted on the website at www.cranston-connect.com.  The CRA is responsible for snow removal in and around the property it owns; Century Hall, Century Hall Park, Art Park and in front of the Windmill.

The public sidewalks, walkways and pathways are owned by the City of Calgary and the City has advised that they strongly recommend and prefer that the CRA does not provide services to these areas.  The City does not perform snow and ice removal services to these areas due to cost and liability reasons.  If you own property adjacent to a City sidewalk, walkway or pathway, then you are responsible to remove snow and ice.  Failure to do so can result in fines.  Please contact the City at 311 to request snow removal, ice removal or report snow and ice issues in these areas.

In addition, you may also want to contact your Cranston Community Association (CCA) Board of Directors to have them lobby the City for snow removal as well as landscaping of your community parks and pathways.  Please go to the Cranston Community Association website at www.cranstonca.com for more information on how your Community Association can help you with community issues.  The next Board Meeting is Tuesday, January 10th at 7:00 pm at Century Hall and residents are invited to attend.   Community Associations in other communities in Calgary have been successful in obtaining an annual snow removal levy (as low as $10/year added to each homeowner’s property taxes) or landscaping maintenance levy (as low as $60/year to each homeowner’s property taxes) to have enhanced landscaping maintenance of City of parks, pathways, etc. in their communities.

If you have any further questions or concerns regarding snow and ice removal on City property, please contact either 311 or the Cranston Community Association at cranstonca@gmail.com or through their website at www.cranstonca.com.

What's the difference between a great neighbourhood and the best neighbourhood?

What factors make that truly winning combination — amenities, price, curb appeal, low crime rate and intangibles such as friendliness of the neighbours?

Avenue Magazine is conducting their annual Best Neighbourhoods Survey and Awards for 2012. Answer Avenue's Best Neighbourhoods Survey (conducted in association with Leger Marketing) and let them know what you think makes Cranston great!

The deadline for survey completion is February 28, 2012. Here is a link to it:  Avenue Magazine

Enjoy the Warmth! - posted Wednesday, December 14, 2011

We hope that you are enjoying the glow and warmth of the Century Hall firepit located in our park facilities.  Although the flames may appear to be soaring high, please rest assured that this unit is safety regulated, and there are no concerns of danger.

It's Open!!! - posted Monday, November 21, 2011

The Hockey Rink has officially opened for the Winter Season!  We are pleased to announce that the Pleasure Rink is now open, as well!  Please note that we are able to operate the Hockey Rink throughout the season, with minimal closures during "chinook times", due to the chiller system that allows it to remain frozen.  Due to it's location, the Pleasure Rink does not have a chiller system and may be subject to closures during "warm spells".  Please be sure to check this websites for any updated closures.

Upon careful consideration, the following schedule has been created, to ensure we are able to meet  the needs of all of our residents!  Your compliance with this schedule is important in ensuring the safety of all users.  Please click on the link provided below to view the Winter 2011 & 2012 Hockey & Pleasure Rink Schedule.pdf

We ask all patrons using the hockey rink to abide by the rules and regulations that we have carefully designed.  Please view these rules by clicking on the following link:  Century Hall Hockey and Pleasure Rink Rules.

For the safety of all, we ask that patrons refrain from using "slap shots" on the Hockey Rink.  These shots tend to send pucks flying in many directions, including over the boards and into high traffic areas of the park.  We have posted signs throughout the hockey rink and would greatly appreciate if you could abide by them.  Netting is also being installed to assist in preventing the hazards of "flying pucks".
